This is the bottom view (part not die) of the coined hat shape with the D-hole. Here you see the evidence of rust. Theextreme pressure lubricant with a rust inhibitor plays a key role in prevention of rusted parts. In any extreme pressureapplications such as heavy coining, it is critical to properly heat treat and temper all the tool steels correctly including any subsequent draw operations. Die shoe and press accuracy is also critical to performance.
This is the same part geometry as depicted on the previous page except this die utilizes a different cutout as the oblong. This is cold rolled steel and this view is the top of the part not the die. Nitrogen cylinders must be used to exert the proper hold down pressure when coining. Also an extreme pressure lubricant with a rust inhibitor is needed to optimize productivity.

This connector is .025 phosphorous bronze and runs at very high speedsreel to reel. The tip is .025 square so it must be shaved. The tab that connects the parts near the tip is used to help keep the slug down during shaving. The stripper insert must also support the blade accurately during the shave. This tool requires a chisel indent at the pilot hole to controlcamber. A stock straightener and servo feed was used.

This is a hot rolled steel chamfered seal for the automotive transmission industry. It is very difficult if not impossible to run with any consistency. The coining punch was designed with an inward chamfer. The first pierced hole theoretically would allow the material to flow inward unrestricted. This was not the case. At first contact of the coin punch the material first went outward, affecting the progression, then inward. Always notch the material for outward flow.

This nickel based alloy is coined at the tip only. The strip is notched out to allow outward flow of material and then is retrimmed to size. Heavy duty die springs or nitrogen cylinders work well. Carbide components are required to reducewear and improve production.

This electronic header blank is actually run using 2 different progressions. It's quite ingenious, but does come with risks. First the holes are perforated and the pilots set up the first progression. The first coin punch strikes both sides of the slit and separates the part so it can be coined further and in doing so creates a longer progression. This is clever in that it saves raw material. The problem here is that the longer progression is not stable and is very dependent on precise shut height and material temper and thickness. Die side slug retention should be incorporated. The coining anvils should becarbide and highly polished because of the abrasive properties of the nickel based alloy. Nitrogen cylinders should also be used. A spare parts system is required to support production along with the ability to access all tooling at the press. The stamping press needs to be extremely rigid and accurate.

This is a header blank coin die top view.This part is a specialized nickelKovar header blank about the size of a dime and .06 thick. It is coined into a hat shape. The tool runs well and requires 2 adjustable stock guides at the end to assist strip location. Because of the production requirements, this tool also requires spare parts support. Compare this strip with the strip 038 on page 3. The parts are the same size but notice the material savings. This tool requires carbide inserts andnitrogen springs. This tool also requires a specially formulated stamping lubricant and applicator. This die must be flooded. Press accuracy is also very critical. Spare parts inventory is required to support production quantities.
