Historians have noted that at one time fruits, imported from Spain, used to be unloaded at a wharf on the Thames that once adjoined the old church yard. Other researchers suggest that there was once a custom in the neighborhood of employers distributing fruit to their servants on certain occasions. Still others, however, are satisfied with the explanation that precious few words besides“lemons”rhyme with“Clement's.”In March 1920 the first“Oranges and Lemons”service was held. Fruit donated by the local Danes was distributed to all children in attendance. Today's service is performed by youngsters dressed in the red and white of the Danish flag. The whole of Angkor was built over a period of about 600 years. It never stopped. It was to recreate in Hindu mythology the Mount Mira, the Hindu Heaven. And the kings wanted to elevate2 themselves to a god?like status and progressive kings enlarged upon it. And so it just grew and grew. Each king wanted to build another temple. They were trying to create Heaven on Earth. 　　The lush jungle paradise they created inevitably caught the attention of the neighboring kingdom of Siam3??now known as Thailand. After one hundred years of off and on battle, the Thai armies began to get the upper hand. At the end of it, the Cambodian people were exhausted. Their resources had run out. The Thais had a relatively easy victory when they finally sacked1 Angkor in 1431. But a mystery surrounds their victory. Without warning the Thai armies abandoned Angkor as suddenly as they conquered it and to this day no one knows why. 　　The Royal Court just literally walked away from Angkor completely. The couple of temples were maintained and visited from time to time. But basically they just turned their back on2 it. And the magnificent city became lost in the mists of time. Rumors of this sacred city floated throughout the jungles of Southeast Asia for centuries. 　　The locals were telling stories. There had been French naturalists through the area, but no one believed the tales. Then, in 1860 the French explorer Henri Mahout set out to find Angkor. One day he stepped into a jungle clearing and found himself walking through the imperial3 ruins of the ancient city. Harry Potter Town Is Britain's Best英国的最佳居所 　　The Dukes of Northumberland have known it for 700 years, but it is now official the small Northumberland town of Alnwick is the best place to live in Britain. In a survey measuring quality of life, Country Life magazine chose Alnwick home to the Dukes of Northumberland since 1309 ahead of second-placed Midhurst in West Sussex and Cornwall's Fowey, which tied with Gloucestershire's Tetbury in third place. "It's just a beautiful place to live in," the 12th Duke of Northumberland said when asked what made the market town, population 8,000, so special. "There's fantastic scenery, good beaches, great fishing and the traffic is not as bad as London." The imposing presence of Alnwick castle used as Hogwarts wizardry school in the Harry Potter films also helped secure the town's victory. Despite the northeast's inclement climate "the town scored no marks for that," said Country Life editor Clive Aslet Alnwick also beat its southern rivals in its low crime rates, provision of affordable housing and a variety of local shops. "We've got one of the best second-hand bookshops in the country," said the Duke. The survey did not measure economic prosperity. According to Aslet, a mix of beauty and communal spirit was considered more important than income. "It's about quality of life and if you want that, then a high income doesn't matter," he said. Alnwick is also just a 30-minute drive from Newcastle. And his near sightedness would mean glasses and close monitoring by an ophthalmologist for the rest of his life. 　　Such a small price to pay, in our opinion, compared to the alternative. 　　Cody wore glasses with great pride, making it abundantly clear to his little brothers that Mommy and Daddy also wore glasses, and wasn't it a shame that they didn't have any themselves. This usually prompted a round of begging from his siblings that it was only fair they get glasses, too. 　　Then kindergarten happened. 　　One day, a couple of kids at recess derailed Cody's bright outlook on having glasses in his possession. One boy said, your glasses look stupid, Cody. Another kid yanked them off his face and bent them. 　　Cody was a timid, small child. Seeing tears well up in his eyes, as he recounted the event, wrung our hearts dry. 　　Just recently though, something changed his outlook. 　　It was the morning of Valentine's Day. I shut off the alarm and groped around in the dark until I found my glasses. I donned them and without turning on the light, blindly made my way to the bathroom. I flipped the bathroom switch, and there I discovered why it was extra dark in my bedroom. 　　My husband, Stephen, had placed two red heart stickers on my glasses. And plastered all over the mismatched antique mirrors above our bathroom basins were the same stickers. 　　"VALENTINE," my husband had scrawled on one mirror, "I LOVE YOU THIS MUCH!" 　　In one mirror was drawn a stick arm with a hand pointing west. And in the other mirror was the same thing pointing east. I was chuckling under my breath, so as not to wake the rest of the household, while staring at my reflection. 　　I penned my response in the mirror, "Thanks to you, sweetie, I've got hearts in my eyes!" 　　While dressing Cody for school, he whispered, "Mom?" 　　"Yes, big boy?" I whispered back. 　　"You got hearts on your glasses." 　　"Yep, I sure do." 　　"You're funny, Mom," he said, his eyes sparkling. We both climbed into the cab of the pickup truck, where other hearts ambushed us. Stuck to the steering wheel was a heart. Another one was on the rearview mirror, on my truck key, on the stick shift, and on my wallet. All compliments of my heart?happy husband. 　　I peeled the hearts from my glasses and handed them to Cody. He stuck them carefully on his own glasses and smiled the whole way to school. 　　I parked in front of his school. 　　"Get your book bag, sweetie," I said. 　　"Mom, can I wear my hearts to class?" 　　I debated it for a moment. Pulling a "stunt" like this could go either way. But the pleading in his eyes sealed8 it for me. What I didn't realize is that I was preparing for the biggest test of my life. 　　Within hours I discovered that I did have cancer. It had spread to my lymph nodes2. I learned at 32 years of age to face mortality3. Every time the doctors entered my room, they walked in with bad news and one more specialist. One white coat meant cancer. Two white coats meant chemo4. Three meant radiation. Four meant detection of another possible tumor 5. 　　At one point five doctors stood around my bed. It seemed fitting because the statistics dropped to a 10% chance of surviving five years. One doctor for each year I might live. 　　There were a multitude of 6 reasons to stick around 7??a husband of 12 years that I loved a whole lot and three beautiful children that were clueless to the plight8 of their mom and dad, but who gave me daily strength in their innocent love and handmade gifts that hung on the hospital wall. 　　To this day, I still have a crayon picture of me resting in bed, with a large head and larger lips, with a thermometer 1 sticking out of my mouth. The words,“get well so u can com home”was my mantra2. 　　I'm thankful for cancer in many ways. Does that sound crazy? I wouldn't wish it on anybody and I don't want to go through it again, but it was a teacher. It helped me to treasure every single day. It forced me to prioritize3 my life. Things that were once important seemed foolish. It pushed me off the rolling wheel this society calls sacred and let me pursue the desires of my heart, instead of my wallet. It gave me the ability to see life as fragile, not one day promised. It allowed me to treasure my three beautiful children, who sometimes brought heart? 　　ache along with joy as they grew up, who are all now in college and can now spell beautifully. 　　When I hit my 5th year of survival, I left my job to write full time. I decided not to write one more word about anything that didn't matter to me. It was a step of faith, but it made perfect sense. Cancer taught me not to let the opportunities of your heart pass you by because we are not promised“one day”or“someday.” 　　On my 40th birthday, I rode gocarts4 with 30 of my closest friends to celebrate. The numbers 4?0 hanging across the wall were a beautiful sight. 　　I celebrated my 10th year of survival on a boat in the Amazon in the rainforest of Brazil. I sat on the top level and watched the sun rise and from somewhere so deep inside, I thanked God for the opportunity to experience life through facing death. 　　You see, life has become a series of celebrations. Last month, I celebrated my 13th year of survival and embraced my 44th birthday. Next month, Richard and I will celebrate our 24th anniversary. Leslie, my oldest, turned 21 last year. My twins are 20. All young adults now, all running after their own dreams, because my bout1 with cancer taught them too. 　　I look at my friend and answer her question. Do I mind telling my age? Absolutely not. I'll shout it from the rooftops2. I'm 44! Just for today 就为了今天 Just for today I will try to live through this day only and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime. Just for today I will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Just for today I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will take my “luck” as it comes. Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways. I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out: If anybody knows of it, it will not count. I will do at least two things I don't want to do—just for exercise. I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt: they may be hurt, but today I will not show it. Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, and try not to improve or regulate anybody but myself. Just for today I will have a program, I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision. Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. During this half hour, sometime, I will try to get a better perspective of my life. Just for today I will be unafraid. The competition, which organizers said was the first of its kind in Europe, will be shown live on the private LNK TV. Top Lithuanian fashion designers will make the contestants' clothes and local dignitaries would serve as the judges, selecting a winner based on "beauty and elegance," Valinskas said. In addition to what many might see as the dubious honor of being crowned Miss Captivity, the winner and runners-up will qualify for 10,000 litas ($2,500) in prizes though they'd only receive them after completing their jail terms.
